Spotsylvania. Grant and Lee’s armies suffered horrendous losses at the “Bloody Angle” during the Battle of Spotsylvania, May 8-19, 1864. Shortly after the Battle of the Wilderness, Grant’s Union forces once again attempted to outflank or smash Lee’s Confederates. Defensive breastworks contributed to savage, close combat that lasted about a week and a half, resulting in 17,000 Union and 8,000 casualties.
