Prior to the First World War, the military powers of Europe formed two great alliances. The “Triple Alliance” consisted of Austria, Italy and Germany. The “Triple Entente,” consisting of England, France and Russia, aligned themselves in opposition. When war finally came, Italy broke with Germany and Austria and cast its lot with the Entente.
