Asa Gray. Charles Darwin first outlined his theory of evolution in a letter to American botanist Asa Gray dated September 5, 1857. The leading botanist of his time, Gray was one of the founders of the National Academy of Science. Born November 18, 1810, Gray made great contributions to the descriptive botany of North America. He was the chief American exponent of Darwin’s concepts, defending them against the attacks of zoologist Louis Agassiz. Gray died on January 30, 1888.
