Vietnam’s invasion of Kampuchea. In 1979, Vietnam invaded Democratic Kampuchea, an ally of China formerly known as Cambodia, and overthrew the Pol Pot-led dictatorship of the Khmer Rouge, which had come to power in 1975. China’s invasion was intended to punish Vietnam and ended with Chinese forces withdrawing after a few weeks, although relations between the two communist countries were strained for years thereafter. Vietnam installed a less repressive regime in Democratic Kampuchea, which was then renamed the People’s Republic of Kampuchea. Although Khmer Rouge guerrilla activity continued, Vietnam withdrew its forces in 1989 and the country was again renamed Cambodia.
