Ohio. The Gnadenhutten Massacre of March 8, 1782, was the retaliatory murder of 96 Ohio Indians by the militia of American Revolutionary War Captain David Williamson at Gnadenhutten Village in southern Ohio. Among the Revolution’s worst atrocities, Williamson and his 90 volunteers feigned friendship and won the confidence of the peaceful villagers, only to slaughter in cold blood all but two young boys who managed to escape. Williamson sought revenge for numerous Indian raids on frontier settlements.
