Chicago White Sox. Eight players of the Chicago White Sox were accused of purposely losing the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Allegations of what became known as the “Black Sox Scandal” began shortly after the World Series, but only gained momentum in September in the following year with an examination of gamblers’ involvement in baseball. Several of the players admitted to a grand jury that they had been bribed to throw the series. White Sox owner Charles Comiskey suspended seven of the players shortly thereafter (an eighth player, also implicated, had already been suspended for another reason). The eight players were indicted and stood trial the following summer. Owing to a lack of evidence–notably the disappearance of the original confessions to the grand jury–the players were acquitted on August 3, 1921. However, the following day, August 4, the new baseball commissioner banned all eight players from the game of baseball for life.
