Louis Botha. Louis Botha was the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa. Botha, whose only formal education was at a German mission school in his native Orange Free State, became active in politics when the New Republic became part of the South African Republic in 1888. When war broke out in 1899, Botha quickly rose through the ranks finally being the commandant general of the Transvaal forces and a signatory at the peace conference in 1902. Returning to politics, he was elected prime minister in 1910, a post he held until his death in 1919.
