H.L. Mencken. Nietzschean iconoclast H.L. Mencken referred to &#171Boobus Americanus» and was cynical about American democracy. Born in Baltimore on September 12, 1880, Mencken won fame as a journalist with the Baltimore Morning Herald and Baltimore Sun, editor of The American Mercury magazine and as a literary critic. Very popular in the post-WWI period, Mencken's literary criticism was instrumental in bringing writers such as D.H. Lawrence, Ford Madox Ford and Sherwood Anderson to the fore. Mencken died on January 29, 1956.
