San Carlos. The San Carlos, commanded by Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala, was the first western ship to anchor in present-day San Francisco harbor in 1775. The exquisite natural harbor was passed by previous captains including Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (1542-43) and Sir Francis Drake (1578). The bay was actually first seen by white men from land. In 1769 a scouting party of Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá viewed the bay from a hilltop. Settlers from Monterey arrived in 1776.
