&#171Greenbelt» towns. The experimental suburban communities for low-income city workers, created by the Resettlement Administration during the Great Depression, were known as &#171Greenbelt» towns. The Resettlement Administration (RA) was established by executive order under provisions of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935. In the midst of the Great Depression, the RA was authorized to administer projects for resettlement of destitute or low-income families from urban and rural areas. The &#171Greenbelt» communities were specifically for low-income urban workers. Among the towns were Greenbelt, Md., near Washington, D.C., Greenhills near Cincinnati and Greendale near Milwaukee.
