1882. The Chinese Exclusion Act, prohibiting the immigration of Chinese laborers into the United States, was passed by Congress in 1882. Strong anti-Chinese feeling in the West led to the act, which was extended for 10 years in 1892 and indefinitely in 1902. The laws were finally repealed in 1943 but only after the Chinese population in the U.S. had declined dramatically.
