Kennedy, Jr. The ship was named for Kennedy’s eldest brother, who had been killed in battle during World War II. Born on November 20, 1925, Kennedy died from an assassin’s bullet June 6, 1968, in Los Angeles after proclaiming victory in California’s Democratic Party primary election.
