Denver. The city of Denver was named after the governor of the Kansas Territory, James William Denver. Gold-seeking settlers at the foot of the Rockies decided to call their settlement ‘Denver’ after the governor of the Kansas Territory, in which the settlement was located. The city began in 1858 as one of several prospecting camps on Cherry Creek in what is now downtown Denver. Denver was incorporated as a city in 1861, was made capital of the Colorado Territory in 1867 and capital of the state of Colorado in 1881.
