Sri Lanka. The world’s first woman prime minister was Sirimavo Bandaranaike in Sri Lanka, an island country in the Indian Ocean formerly known as Ceylon. She served as prime minister twice, 1960-65 and 1970-77. Under her leadership a republican constitution was adopted in 1972 and the name of Ceylon changed to Sri Lanka.
