250,000. Ancient Rome’s Circus Maximus, expanded under Constantine in the 4th century A.D., had an estimated seating capacity of 250,000. The largest of Rome’s hippodromes, a U-shaped stadium with a low wall running in the middle around which chariots raced, it seated an estimated 150,000 spectators at the time of Julius Caesar in the 1st century B.C.
