The USS Kearsage put an end to the destructive career of the Confederate raider Alabama on June 19, 1864. Built in England, the Confederacy used it as a commerce destroyer with great success–the Alabama captured, sank or burned 68 ships in 22 months. It was finally sunk near Cherbourg off the coast of France.
