August Bebel was a leading figure in this movement:
August Bebel was an outstanding political figure in Western European Socialism and co-founder of the German Social Democratic Party. Born in 1844, Bebel participated in the foundation of the Social Democratic Party in 1869 and was sentenced to prison for treason in 1872. As head of the Social Democrats he was chief opposition leader in the Reichstag in the 1890s and 1900s. He died in 1913.
