Before becoming the revolutionary communist leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro earned a doctorate in law. The son of a Spanish immigrant farmer, Castro entered the School of Law at the University of Havana in 1945. He was intensely interested in politics throughout his studies and joined the Cuban People`s Party upon graduating in 1950. Dr. Castro`s potential career as an elected representative came to an end when General Batista overthrew the Socarr?s government and established a dictatorship. Castro began organizing armed resistance to the regime and eventually succeeded in the revolution of 1959. As the political leader of Cuba for the past four decades, he has received various honorary doctorates.
