By a treaty signed on August 4, 1916, this country ceded the Virgin Islands to the United States.
By a treaty signed on August 4, 1916, Denmark ceded to the United States the Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John and about 50 other small Caribbean islets and cays. The Act of March 3, 1917, authorized payment by the U.S. of $25 million for the islands. Official possession took place on March 31, 1917.
