American author Sinclair Lewis, born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, on February 7, 1885, refused in 1926 to accept the Pulitzer Prize for fiction he was awarded for the novel Arrowsmith, saying that awards made writers "safe, polite, obedient and sterile.? He went on to become in 1930 the first American to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, which he kept, for the novel Babbitt. Lewis, who authored 23 novels and 3 plays, died on January 10, 1951.
