American novelist William Faulkner enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1918 as a cadet pilot. Before his finished his basic training, World War I ended and he returned to his home in Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner, born in New Albany, Mississippi, in 1897, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. Faulkner died July 6, 1962.
