British explorer Charles Sturt is known as the "father of Australian exploration.? He was the first to penetrate deep into Australia?s interior from 1828 to 1845 during three hazardous expeditions. Born in 1795, his last expedition came to an end when his eyesight was impaired by exposure and illness. He died in 1869. Scotsman John McDouall Stuart was part of Sturt?s final expedition and went on to become a major explorer, crossing the continent from Adelaide to Port Darwin in 1862.
