The Shenandoah. The 682-foot Shenandoah was built by the U.S. Navy in 1923. Two years later the dirigible broke apart in mid-air, killing 14 persons aboard. The Los Angeles was built for the Navy in Germany and delivered in 1924. The Akron was commissioned in 1931 and was, at the time, the world?s largest airship at 785 feet. During a thunderstorm in 1933, the Akron was destroyed, killing 73 of the 77 persons aboard.
