Pope Leo X awarded the title of "Defender of the Faith? to Henry VIII in recognition of his writings in support of the Catholic Church. The Pope awarded the title to Henry in 1521. Henry had penned a defense of the seven Catholic Sacraments in response to Martin Luther?s Protestant reform movement. By 1534, Henry had broken completely with the Catholic Church, and the Pope?s authority in England was abolished.
