After his appointment as Secretary of State by Herbert Hoover in 1929, Henry L. Stimson was quoted as saying, "Gentlemen do not read other?s mail.? Soon after Stimson ended funding for cryptanalysis. Born in New York in 1867, Stimson served in the cabinets of four presidents as Secretary of War and Secretary of State. He died on October 20, 1950.
