This Union general earned the sobriquet the "Rock of Chickamauga."
General Thomas earned the sobriquet the "Rock of Chickamauga? by his determined stand against attacking Confederate troops on September 20, 1863. Thomas stayed and fought even after his commander, William Rosecrans, retreated to Chattanooga. President Abraham Lincoln later appointed Thomas as Rosecrans` successor.
