Volleyball. Invented by William G. Morgan in 1895, volleyball was first known as mintonette. Morgan, physical director of the Holyoke, Massachusetts, Young Men?s Christian Association, designed the new indoor sport for businessmen who found the new game of basketball too vigorous. Observers, noting the volleying nature of the game, proposed the name volleyball, which soon became popular among men and women.
