Legendary motion picture director Cecil B. DeMille reportedly said to his staff, "You are here to please me. Nothing else on earth matters.? Born on August 12, 1881, DeMille attended the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts and in 1900 began working on plays with his older brother William. He made his first film in 1914, The Squaw Man, for a new movie company headed by Samuel Goldwyn. It established him as one of America?s top directors. He went on to direct films of all types, making stars out of prot?g?s such as Gloria Swanson and Thomas Meighan in the silent era and Charleton Heston and Paulette Goddard in the talkies. DeMille, one of Hollywood?s toughest and most successful filmmakers, died in 1959.
