A conflict between troops of China and Japan on July 7, 1937, came to be known as the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. The incident, which occurred near the Marco Polo Bridge outside of Beijing, eventually escalated into warfare between the two countries and was the prelude to the Pacific side of World War II.
