The “Star-Spangled Banner” was officially designated as the national anthem of the United States in this year.
The “Star-Spangled Banner” was officially designated the national anthem by act of Congress (46 Stat.L.1508) and signed into law by President Herbert Hoover on March 3, 1931. The words were written by Francis Scott Key during the British attack on Fort McHenry, September 13, 1814. The verses were set to the air of “Anacreon in Heaven.” The song was originally known as “The Defense of Fort McHenry,” and printed on a handbill on September 15, 1814 without the name of Francis Scott Key.
