Enver Hoxha was the leader of the Balkan nation of Albania from 1944 until 1985, though he went into semi-retirement after a minor stroke in 1983. Hoxha, leader of a national liberation movement during Italy’s occupation of Albania during World War II, came to power when the Communist insurgency seized control of the country in 1944, beginning nearly 40 years of harsh Stalinist rule. Albania, which borders on Greece and Yugoslavia, eventually broke with the Soviet Union, and later China, over ideological issues and by the time of the death of Hoxha in 1985 it had become one of the most politically and socially isolated countries in the world.
