The goal of the Throckmorton Plot of 1583 was the overthrow of Queen Elizabeth I and the restoration of papal authority in England. Francis Throckmorton was the central figure in the conspiracy involving France and Spain, which called for a French invasion of England and the release from prison of Mary, Queen of Scots. Throckmorton, who was born in 1554, was arrested in November 1583 and made a full confession after being tortured on the rack. He was tried and then executed on July 20, 1584.
