American astronaut Neil Armstrong, who went on to become the first man to walk on the moon, was nearly killed in a lunar module trainer accident on May 6, 1968, near Ellington Air Force Base in Texas. The lunar module trainer he was piloting suddenly went out of control and Armstrong parachuted to safety just seconds before it crashed and burned. Armstrong manually piloted the lunar module Eagle down to a safe landing on the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969 and became the first man to set foot on the moon that night at 10:56 p.m.
