The Thirty Years? War began in 1618 when Protestant nobles in Bohemia revolted against the rule of the Catholic Hapsburg Ferdinand, who became Holy Roman Emperor as Ferdinand II in 1619. The conflict spread across Europe with most of the fighting taking place in Germany. The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 brought the war to an end and ended the emperor?s authority over Germany outside the Hapsburg domain.
