Temperance agitator Carrie Nation first used a hatchet to wreck a saloon in Wichita, Kansas, in 1900. As a result, the hatchet soon became the symbol of her crusade against alcohol. Born in Kentucky in 1846, Nation?s first husband died of alcoholism and her second marriage ended in divorce. She was often arrested, fined and jailed for her actions. She died in 1911.
