Morse, inventor of the telegraph, sent the first telegraph message from the U.S. Supreme Court room in Washington, D.C., to his partner in Baltimore, Alfred Vail, who invented the telegraphic printing technique in 1844. Congress had appropriated $30,000 for the experimental line built by Ezra Cornell between Washington and Baltimore.
