U Saw served as prime minister here from 1940-42.
U Saw served as prime minister of Burma from 1940-42. As head of the Myochit party, U Saw became prime minister of the then British colony in 1940. When the British entered the war against Japan, U Saw pressed the British for full independence, while secretly negotiating with the Japanese. Upon learning of his contacts with Japan, the British arrested him and removed him from office. U Saw was responsible for the assassination of his rival Aung San after the war.
