The town once named Yerba Buena is now known as San Francisco. In 1846, Yerba Buena had a population of about 850 people. That same year, the U.S. took it over from Mexico without incident when Captain John B. Montgomery led a party of marines and sailors ashore from the U.S.S.Portsmouth and raised the U.S. flag in Yerba Buena?s plaza. The town was renamed San Francisco in 1847.
