Alexander Hamilton Stephens, born near Crawfordville, Georgia, in 1812, is best known as Vice President of the Confederate States of America. Stephens, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1843 to 1859, was a delegate at the Montgomery meeting that formed a new union of the seceded states. He was elected vice president to Jefferson Davis on February 9, 1861. Stephens was later elected governor of Georgia in 1882 but died after serving just a few months.
