Although Colonel Theodore Roosevelt became a national hero after he led his volunteer cavalry unit, the Rough Riders, in the Battle for Cuba?s San Juan Heights during the Spanish-American War in 1898, the colonel did not receive the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action, as he had hoped. On the 100 anniversary of the war, Teddy?s great-grandson Tweed Roosevelt lobbied for the medal to be awarded. After Congress approved and army experts completed a review of the matter, President Clinton awarded a Medal of Honor posthumously to Theodore Roosevelt for his actions under fire during the Spanish-American War.
