Dr. Benjamin Spock came in fourth in the 1972 U.S. presidential election with 78,756 votes as the candidate of the People?s Party. Spock, a pediatrician whose book Baby and Child Care has sold some 50 million copies since 1946, had a profound effect on the Baby Boom generation. Politically liberal, Spock was an outspoken opponent to the Vietnam War and nuclear technology. He was born in New Haven, Conn. on May 2, 1903. He attended Yale University and was a member of the gold medal crew team at the 1924 Olympics. Dr. Spock died March 15, 1998.
