Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist and essayist writing under the name George Orwell, depicted the dangers of totalitarian government in his novel Animal Farm, published in 1945 at the onset of the Cold War. His characterization of the farm animals suggested certain Soviet leaders of the period. In the novel, the animal?s equality slogan proclaims, "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.? In 1949 Orwell?s most celebrated novel, 1984, was published. The title of this work, which describes a futuristic socialist society under the omnipresent guidance of ?Big Brother,? has become symbolic of a frightening, totalitarian system. Blair, born in India in 1903, died in 1950.
