Daniel Decatur Emmett, the composer of "Dixie,? which became the unofficial national anthem of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on October 29, 1815. Organizer of one of the first minstrel shows, ?Dixie? was written in 1859 as a concluding number, or ?walk-around,? for a minstrel show. Emmett died on June 28, 1904.
