In July 1877 riots and violence erupted in several major American cities stemming from strikes against railroads in protest of wage cuts. Starting on July 17 against the Baltimore & Ohio, strikes quickly spread west, with riots erupting in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago and St. Louis. Nine were killed when Federal troops were sent into Martinsburg, West Virginia. On July 21, 26 were killed and the Union Depot and machine shops were burned down.
