During World War II, Hungary was home to the fascist movement called the Arrow Cross. Leader of the extremist right-wing organization, Ferencz Szalasi, was put in charge of the country in October 1944 by the occupying Germans when the Hungarian government sought an armistice with the Soviet Union.
