General George Gordon Meade said "Well, I?ve been tried and condemned without a hearing, and I suppose I shall have to go to execution,? in response to his June 28, 1863 appointment as head of the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Within a week his army won the Battle of Gettysburg, assuring Meade of a record of success superior to all of his predecessors.
