Bergen-Belsen.The young Anne Frank was sent to Bergen-Belsen after being discovered hiding with her family in an attic in Holland. She perished in the death camp in March, 1945, shortly before the camp was liberated by British forces in April. Located near Hanover, Bergen-Belsen was opened in 1943 as a POW camp. When the British arrived, they found more than 10,000 unburied corpses. Some 14,000 of the prisoners found at the camp died within a few days. The diary of Anne Frank has enlightened generations about the horrors of Nazism.
