The Salvation Army
What began as a family mission in East London in 1865 with soup kitchens and ?Food for the Millions? shops spread to become a worldwide organization. Salvationists came to Philadelphia and New York in 1879 to begin the work of the Salvation Army in the United States. By the time of William Booth?s death in 1912, the Salvation Army labored in 58 countries; today it works in 109. The picture above shows a woman carrying baskets of Christmas dinners to distribute in New York in 1908.
