Eyewitness to World War II, Unforgettable Stories and Photographs From History’s Greatest Conflict, by Neil Kagan and Stephen G. Hyslop. A rich visual timeline of the action on the front and at home.

War Photography, Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath, by Anne Wilkes Tucker and Will Michels, with Natalie Zelt (Yale, $75). Issued in conjunction with an exhibit traveling the country through 2014, this book features the work of such famous photojournalists as Mathew Brady, Robert Capa, and Chris Hendros.

Great Empires, An Illustrated Atlas, by Stephen G. Hyslop and Patricia Daniels (National Geographic, $40). A roundup of the people, ambitions, and battles that created history’s greatest powers, from ancient Greece through the 20th century.

Fit Men Wanted, Original Posters From the Home Front, introduction by Nigel Steel (Thames & Hudson, $29.95). A fun peek at British propaganda posters during World War II, courtesy of the Imperial War Museum’s collection.
