Artist Henri Lovie titled this sketch, The Camp of the Contrabands on the Mississippi, Fort Pickering, Memphis, Tenn, 1862. Fort Pickering was not a refugee camp but a captured Rebel bastion Grant’s army used as a staging area where former slaves found work. DeSoto Park stands on the site today.
